The Dutch Road Authorities (Rijkswaterstaat) have performed research with smart cameras that can 'read' the situation on the road, which makes the opening and closing of peak lanes faster, easier and safer. Smart software that is connected to exisiting cameras, learns to detect aberrent situations such as a breakdown or lost cargo. Traffic operators in the traffic central receive a signal from the smart camera and can directly respond by, for example, closing a peak lane for traffic. The software is also capable of measuring traffic density and on this basis decide to open or close a peak lane.
