Counting crowds on Queensday 2012

ViNotion has developed advanced computer vision technology for the detection of moving objects. This technology is integrated in a new product that can automatically count people. The technology is suitable for both indoor and outdoor operation, but has been specifically designed to be robust in difficult situations (sun, shadow, rain, low-light conditions and crowds). The counting system has been applied during the Queensday 2012 festivities in Eindhoven.

The counting system can form the basis for the decisions of crowd management, police, event organisers, marketing purposes and shopping centers. The availability of real-time counting data allows for online adaptation in such scenarios.

ViNotion counted people entering and exiting the city during the total event with ranging light conditions. During peak hours, the amount of people passing the camera was massive. Compared to the manually annotated number of people the automatically counted numbers are > 90% accurracy.

Partners in the validation experiment were ViNotion, Eindhoven City, Ampleye, Tele-Events and Mezuro.
